All Ok, Jumpmaster: Florida Personalized License Plate
When you see a personalized license plate, it often tells a unique story. For some, it may represent a hobby or interest, while for others, it may symbolize an important moment or achievement. In my case, my newly assigned Florida specialty plate, "US Paratrooper," with the text "All Ok," captures a pivotal moment in my life when I discovered that, despite fear, I could still operate and courageously move forward towards danger during my time at airborne school.
The Significance of "All Ok"
The seemingly simple phrase "All Ok" carries immense weight and significance for those who have undergone airborne training in the US Army. As the first person to exit the aircraft upon receiving a green light, the person in the door position must give the final ok to the jumpmaster, essentially signaling that they and everyone behind them are ready to make the leap. Over the roaring winds and the hum of the engines, the paratrooper yells, "All Ok, Jumpmaster," creating an atmosphere of trust and unity among the troops.
A Teenager in Airborne School
In airborne school, your position in the jump stick is determined by the alphabetical ranking of your last name. With a last name starting with L, I found myself right in the middle. During jump week, I learned that the aircraft was loaded in such a way that those with last names starting with A-K were lined up to jump out of one side, while L-Z lined up on the other. This arrangement put me in the door position for 4 out of my first 5 jumps.
Embracing Courage, Trust, and Teamwork:
There's a distinct adrenaline rush when you're the first in line to jump out of the aircraft. As the first out, I felt the weight of my fellow soldiers' trust in me, knowing that I would not stall, I would not panic, and I would perform my functions as trained. These moments taught me the importance of courage, trust, and teamwork – values that I have carried with me throughout my life.
My personalized "US Paratrooper" license plate, serves to remind me of those formative experiences and the lessons they taught me. The "All Ok" text serves as both a tribute to my fellow paratroopers and a reminder of the strength we all found within ourselves during our time at airborne school, learning to face fear and move forward in the face of danger.
