Flagler County Sheriff Stands by 'Constitutional Carry' Bill

HB543, also known as the "A bill related to the concealed carry of weapons and firearms.", is a topic of heated debate throughout Florida. If passed, the law would allow law-abiding citizens to carry concealed weapons without needing a state issued concealed carry permit, as long as they are legally able to possess a firearm. Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly has voiced his support for the bill, arguing that it is time to give citizens the freedom to exercise their Constitutional right to bear arms without the burden of obtaining a permit.

Sheriff Staly, who is also a life member of
the NRA, points out that criminals don't follow the law and don't receive any training or permits before carrying weapons. He questions why law-abiding citizens should have to go through the process of obtaining a permit to protect themselves against criminals or to exercise their Constitutional right. Sheriff Staly further emphasizes that the current training requirement is inadequate, and he believes that it's unnecessary to put additional burdens on law-abiding citizens.

While some people oppose the new law, I share Sheriff Staly's sentiment that the current training requirements to obtain a CCW permit are insufficient. The two-hour class, which only requires the firing of a single round from a pistol, is hardly enough to prepare citizens for real-life self-defense situations. The new law would eliminate this training requirement, but there would still be additional criteria to meet, including being of mentally sound mind, having no criminal convictions for the previous three years, and not being a chronic abuser of drugs or alcohol.

In conclusion, I have to stand with Sheriff Staly's position, criminals don't follow the law and don't require training or permits to carry weapons.  Though the bill's future remains uncertain, I certainly believe it's a I believe that it's necessary to reevaluate the current CCW permit system and ensure that law-abiding citizens have the means to defend themselves against potential threats.
